The third book in LUP’s Opening the Future (OtF) open access programme has reached its funding target: due for publication later in November, A World Without Hunger: Josué de Castro and the History of Geography by Archie Davies will be part of the press’s successful Liverpool Latin American Studies series.

LUP published their first OtF-funded OA book in July 2022, and their second in October and are pleased to see the programme building momentum. With 27 library members on board already, the press puts all OtF subscription fees towards opening up new frontlist titles like this one in open access format. As subscribers, all 27 libraries get special, perpetual access to a selection of 37 backlist books on Latin American culture, history and language. In subscribing to this backlist libraries are simultaneously funding the press’s efforts to open up a future for the public good, helping to build an open, global ‘collection’ that is shared by libraries in common, around the world.

A World Without Hunger will draw on the personal archive of the geographer Josué de Castro, and tell a new history of geography by following one of the twentieth century’s most influential and creative Brazilian intellectuals from the city of Recife to the halls of the UN, and into exile in Paris.

When published in November (details tba) it will be available to buy in print but, as with all their other Opening the Future-funded titles, the OA version will also be freely available for download on LUP’s website, also on OAPEN and listed on DOAB.
